Beginnings

O, the blank, blank page
That looks so cold,
Seems so old,
And yet it's ever-new.

Did the first man stare
In utter helplessness
At the empty stone wall
Before him?

Did he hesitate to draw
The bison first,
The horse or reindeer?

Did he have an audience
Of troglodytes,
And were there critics then?

Could he foresee
That one day he'd
Be using paper and pen?
