The Good Luck Bug

The seven-spotted ladybug
Is loved by all, and thought to be
The most appealing bug to see.

Before dismissing with a shrug
The claim that she can bring good luck,
Consider why her fame has stuck.

Of aphids she is very fond—
The wise ones who employ her know,
Her diet helps a garden grow.

Named "ladybird" across the pond,
She was the answer to the prayers
Of farmers who were fraught with cares.

In Mother Mary's name they prayed.
Our Lady sent the bug to aid
Their struggle to preserve their corn;
The legend of the bug was born.
