The Heart of the Matter
However misinformed my feelings are,
Mistaking firelight for a blazing star,
I still profess to faithfully embrace
The basic goodness giving life its grace.
Sophisticated pleasures are the pride
Of those who take pretension as their guide.
I find the greatest pleasure in pursuits
Which have a common practice at their roots.
A conversation with a kindred soul
Has powers to preserve and make us whole.
A contemplative walk will clear the mind,
Persuading me to leave my doubts behind.
Good books are often better than good wine;
Good love at home is natural and divine.
No complicated pastimes can compare
With simple pleasures, simply free of care.
