Magellanic Penguins

The penguins known as Magellanic
In shape resemble bowling pins,
With large flat feet and flipper fins.

Their diet is an oceanic
Buffet of squid, small fish, and krill.
Beneath the waves, they eat their fill.

The penguins are an odd collage—
A flightless bird at home on land
Whose meals depend on surf and sand.

Their countershading camouflage
Conceals them in the water where
Black blends with deep, white echoes air.

They grunt, they bleat, they bray to talk;
And worse, they waddle when they walk.
But Patagonia, we praise
You for your penguins and their ways.
