The Mathemagician's Wand

First there was One—
Zero came later, as a concept
Which filled a need for elegance
In mathematical equations.
Quantum mechanics
Produces viable results,
Just as calculus continues
To spawn countless applications.
The challenge, as ever,
Is to unite the four worlds.

Picture the suits of tarot—
Wands are spiritual energy,
Cups are emotional time,
Swords are mental space,
Pentacles are physical matter.
The philosopher's stone,
Transmuting base lead to gold,
Was a way of expressing
Fire, water, air and earth.
The scientist today
Hopes to find a way
Of explicating every
Action in the universe.
