Our Sights Are Set

Our sights are set on simple goals—
     We celebrate the hours of each day
With a blend of work and play,
     And this is how we save our souls.

Nothing purchased stays in hand
     Past the stroke of midnight when
All the houses built by men
     Tumble down like piles of sand.

That is why we do not keep
     Appointments with the Treasury;
What we treasure most, we see
     In our hearts and in our sleep.
