for Lone Mountain, University of San Francisco
Far overhead, I hear the sound—
A red-tailed hawk whose high-pitched cry
Reveals his presence in the sky.
He soars with ease above the ground,
A soul unknown to gravity;
Unfettered, graceful, strong and free.
His partner in the stratosphere,
His lifelong mate, flies at his side;
They rise and fall in circles wide.
Unrivalled for their vision clear,
They dive down onto prey below,
Who are no match for such a foe.
I climb the hillside steps to see
Them nesting in a tall pine tree.
It is a great reward to share
Lone Mountain with this raptor pair.
