Striking a Balance

I would not be led by one
Whose judgement is
Unequal to my own.

Instead, I would befriend
The soul within
The personality

And by example illustrate
The soul of friendship
Gladly given.

Not all our friends have aims
Compatible with ours,
Nor can we claim

To stride with them
Along the way
To different ends.

And so, I would allow
Our friendship to develop
In the name of what is fair

While not allowing it
To subjugate my tastes,
Or what I mark as vital.
