Zoo Keeper

pour Minou et Hibou

She was more than sensitive
To the nuances of speech—

Each syllable that slid
Between her lips

Was fashioned out of fondness
For the consonants and vowels.

Elementary sounds
Were kept and cared for
In their cages.

She entered each cage
At feeding time,
Keeper to her charges.
