Ambition's Surly Children

Rapidly promoting favours
Born of unenlightened greed,
Some will try to win preferment
Openly and without shame.

Others are not so transparent
In their struggle to succeed.
Open bribes are not their method;
They prefer a secret game.

Few are those who take the high road,
Putting faith before their need.
Honour is its own reward, though—
Lasting longer than false fame.
