Ashley's Exit

On the twenty-third of June
In the unrelenting gloom
Of a large ancestral room
Devoted to the manly arts,
Young Ashley took his life.

He did it with a knife,
And left upon the floor
A pool of blood that slowly
Spread beneath the door.

The butler was quite horrified
To see the way young Ashley died.
The maid was struck with sorrow;
They'd planned to wed tomorrow.
