Beside the Sea

I dreamed I saw my lamb one day,
     Alive as you or me—
A-roving where the seagulls play,
     Asleep beside the sea.

I crept up to it unawares,
     Afraid to make a sound;
I poured upon it all my cares
     And thought that it had drowned.

But when my heart was calm once more
     And all my tears had dried,
I saw my lamb rise on the shore
     As if it never died.
