The Coming Birth

for Lisa, my sister

After many long years of lying
Fallow, you've decided to embrace
The species. Your cup is full,
And soon it will grow fuller.
Howler monkeys mark the event
With a string of syncopated cries.
The skies break open, pouring forth
In support of your gestation,
Filling up baptismal fonts
In every bit of sunken ground.
With a rumble and a roll, the earth
Anticipates the coming birth.
This beginning is the first
Of many steps to follow.
