For Those Not Whole

I wonder how it feels to be aware
Of everything surrounding you,
But to lack the means of grasping
The texture or the grain of things—

To be in touch and yet to have
No way of knowing touch again,
To live each day in separation
From the world that's wide around you—

Tell me how you bridge the gap
To reconnect with your own sense
Of being human; what would those
Who know you say about your spirit?

I wonder, would they think of you
As one diminished and resigned,
Or would they look to you
For the wisdom of endurance?
