One Night with a Visiting Dignitary
While strolling down the avenue
One night with Dr. Astarac,
We stopped to talk of roses
And the gaps between the stars.
He said the plains of Mars
Were oceans once, full of life
And bright fantastic shapes—
I could see what he described.
In my fancy, I imbibed
The green, invigorating waters
Of pale Venusian streams
And strolled along her grassy slopes.
We continued on our mutual way,
More at home with night than day.
