Running Towards Reunion with Herself

for Marie B.

Running out of sight
Through swirling fog that greets the trees
And settles on the jagged rocks.

Running on the broken coast,
Scattering clumps of sand in her wake.

Running for her life, forcing fresh air
Into stretched lungs, hearing the surfbeat sound
Of blood pounding in her ears.

Running to forget her life—
Her ties to friends, to home, to what is known.

Running to recover the essential kernel,
The seed of her persona.

Running to become again
The child with eyes that wander over everything,
Giving weight to nothing.

Running not from fear, but towards herself.
