Speech Release

In a moment when I speak,
The words will flow
According to the rhythm
That is there within them.

The poet coaxes
Each one to release
Its special beat.

Sound and syntax,
The pressure point of accent,
Meanings blending into one another—

These create another gate,
Different than reason,
By which we gain our way
Into the world of words.

I would go,
Ambassador into that land,
And feel redeemed if I could bring
One emblem of its wealth
Back into this life,
Curled up lightly in my hand.
