The virtue of utility
Is recognised by all,
But seldom celebrated
In the way that beauty, say,
Is held in high esteem.

No actor takes the stage
To stirringly proclaim
The advantage of his pocket knife
For cutting open envelopes,
Slicing bits of string,
And many other things
Too numerous to mention.

And yet, the feeling that we get
When having been of use
Is like no other satisfaction.
It brings a sense of self-fulfilment
Long-lasting and unique.
