Winter Sun

How calm the winter sun appears
     Between the leafless trees;
How peacefully it quells my fears,
     Inspiring inner ease.

The winter sun means more to me
     On melancholy days
Than summer with its panoply
     Of all-consuming rays.

When life retreats beneath the snow
And all the fields are still,
The winter sun will let me know
     What lies beyond this hill.

Although its beams are rarefied
And soon give way to night,
The winter sun is still my guide,
     Consoling with its light.

Inside of me there is a part
     Untouched by earthly wars,
A secret chamber of the heart
     The winter sun restores.
